Friendship Bridge is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that creates opportunities that empower Guatemalan women to break the generational cycle of poverty and build a better life through microfinance, education, and women’s health services.

Founded in 1989 to provide medical programs in Vietnam, Friendship Bridge shifted its focus to microfinance in 1994, seeking a more sustainable solution to reducing poverty by offering small loans to business women who were not served by traditional banks. By 1998, Friendship Bridge had expanded their work to Guatemala, and with the support and investment of donors, made this war-torn country its sole focus for microcredit loans.

Today, Friendship Bridge serves nearly 22,000 entrepreneurial women who have created meaningful ways to support themselves and their families with help from the dedicated team at Friendship Bridge and the Microcredit Plus program. This innovative program combines credit with education and health services that are tailored to the stage of development of each client’s business as well as her personal situation.

Headquartered in Panajachel, Guatemala, Friendship Bridge has seven branches and 2 satellite offices throughout rural western Guatemala, as well as a small US-based staff in Boulder, Colorado.
